Since 1977, early detection as the best weapon against breast cancer
Metaltronica is an Italian company based in Rome, and a leading player in the diagnostic imaging field, specializing in the design and production of mammography systems.
The company has always placed innovation at the center of its mission, developing advanced technological solutions to serve radiology professionals.
Cesare Blasi, Domestic Sales Director, would you tell us about the history of the company and its philosophy?
«Our story begins with an earlier artisan business, a company called Fratelli Blasi, of which my father was one of the founders. From that enterprise was born Metaltronica, which today operates in both the domestic and international markets through an extensive distribution network. Our business philosophy is based on continuous technological evolution as a driving force to improve the performance of our devices. We constantly work closely with physicians and radiology professionals to ensure state-of-the-art solutions».
Metaltronica caters to hospitals, university clinics and private diagnostic imaging centers, and also sets up mobile units for mammography screening campaigns.
What are the future trends in such a large market?
«The industry has been constantly evolving since mammography screening became a necessity to fight breast cancer: in 2022 it recorded about two million cases worldwide while in 2023, in Italy alone, about 56,000 new cancers were diagnosed. This drives us to continually invest in improving early detection options, which have the potential to intervene in the course of the condition, increasing the likelihood of a full recovery. Today, with advanced systems, it is possible to detect tumors at an early stage, in the form of small microcalcifications».
Director, in such a competitive industry, what differentiates Metaltronica from your competitors?
«Ours is a high-tech niche sector that requires considerable economic investment and the aid of a particularly expert and well-trained staff. Metaltronica develops all products completely in-house, from design to manufacture and follows them throughout their life cycle, constantly updating them. Particular attention has always been paid to the design of the products, to help patients feel more at ease during the examination».
Besides women’s health, is there another aspect that you are proud of?
«The business success we have achieved in recent years has enabled us to establish an industrial hub consisting of two adjacent sites with a total area of more than 3,000 square meters. Metaltronica currently employs 85 people. Among them, the 50 white-collar employees are evenly split between men and women, with a mean age of approximately 40.
Research and Development is our flagship department, which is committed daily to integrating our systems with the latest technologies in order to make the work of breast specialists and radiology technicians increasingly efficient and safe. Environmental sustainability is not left behind either: when designing our medical systems, we are very careful in our choice of materials and components. We collaborate with Erion and participate in the European Green Deal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We promote waste reduction, particularly associated with electronic items».
Silvia Magnani, Product Strategy Manager: what innovations have you introduced in recent years?
«Mammography is a fundamental examination for early detection of breast cancer. This is why the primary need is to improve the diagnostic accuracy of our systems: all our mammograms integrate the most advanced technologies such as tomosynthesis, contrast medium examinations, and devices to perform biopsies, which are targeted tissue samples that are then examined in the laboratory. Women’s health is at the core of what we do. Our advanced technologies — developed in collaboration with hospitals and research centers — are always at the cutting edge and can be customized to meet all clinical needs.».
What will be the future technological developments?
«We are introducing Cybele to the market — a patented multimodality device that integrates mammography, ultrasound, and bone densitometry into a single solution. This simplifies the diagnostic process, reducing time and improving efficiency. In addition, Cybele offers advanced mammography, safer and more comfortable prone position biopsy, and the ability to rapidly assess bone density using artificial intelligence. The future of radiology will be increasingly linked to AI, with neural networks capable of combining diagnostic and genetic information to further improve patient history».
Metaltronica is firmly committed to the fight against breast cancer, developing and improving technologies for early detection.
